Philosophy
The NBA seeks to provide a positive learning environment for children where they can experience the following:
- Appreciation for physical activity (healthy body, healthy mind)
- Learn the basics of basketball (fine motor skills, coordination)
- Building of confidence (have fun, self-education)
- Learn about teamwork (cooperation toward attaining goals)
- Get exposure to low-level competition (experience and deal with competition)
The NBA is all about learning. Basketball happens to be a means to this end. Individuals that play here may be successful in basketball or some other athletic or educational endeavor. Hopefully what they experience and learn here contributes to the personal foundation of the individual participant.
The NBA seeks to educate individuals as to the value of sports in life. We also look forward to seeing their athletic successes after they leave the NBA. These successes also may, or not, include basketball. If some of our graduates turn out being great basketball players in the future, terrific! If not, just "Play as Long as You Can."
Lastly, we actively support a number of NHS students each year who act as volunteers in the program in order to meet Community Service graduation requirements. Most of these volunteers played in the program as youngsters.
